Soap, Suds, & Sheep

When it comes to your handmade knits and woollen goods, it is important to take care of them so they last a lifetime. Handmade pieces and natural fibres can be delicate; use these steps to ensure they stay looking their best:

Airing - wool doesn't need to be washed often and in some instances can have antimicrobial properties. Try airing your garment inside out before opting for a wash.

Washing - when you do feel your pieces would benefit from a clean, handwash them in lukewarm water and a little wool or delicate detergent. Soak your knits before gently rinsing several times, being careful not to stretch the fabric.

Drying - gently lay your pieces flat on a towel and make sure not to stretch the fabric. This is important as wool takes on the shape it has been dried in. Place another towel on top and press into your knits, absorbing the extra water. Remove this top towel and allow your pieces to air dry in the desired shape. Sometimes this can be referred to as blocking a knit.

Loose ends - handmade knits often require multiple balls of yarn which must be seamlessly joined together. This is done by weaving the tail ends of yarn into your knits. Through wear and washing these can sometimes slightly unravel or poke through to the front. This is completely normal and only requires you to push these back to the inside of your knits to keep them looking tidy and seamless.
